The Story Behind Irish Ferries

Irish Ferries was born out of a deep love for Ireland's rugged western coastline. Founded in 2009 by local maritime enthusiasts at Doolin Pier, Co. Clare, our mission was simple: share the wonder of the Aran Islands and the Wild Atlantic Way with travellers from around the world.

What began as a single vessel carrying a handful of passengers to Inis Oírr has grown into one of Ireland's most trusted coastal ferry services. We operate daily sailings to the three Aran Islands — Inis Mór, Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr — as well as scenic routes past the iconic Cliffs of Moher.

Over 15 years and hundreds of thousands of passengers later, our commitment remains unchanged: safe, comfortable, and unforgettable experiences on Ireland's most spectacular waterways. The irishferries name has become synonymous with quality service and authentic Atlantic adventure.

Our Mission

To connect travellers with the untouched beauty of Ireland's island heritage, delivering safe, reliable, and memorable ferry journeys that honour the natural environment and the communities we serve — from the moment you step onto Doolin Pier to the moment you arrive at your island destination.

Safety First

Every sailing is governed by the highest maritime safety standards. Our fully certified crew and modern vessels put passenger wellbeing above everything else.

Sustainability

We are committed to protecting the fragile Atlantic ecosystem. From low-emission engines to waste reduction initiatives, we sail with respect for the sea.

Authentic Hospitality

Irish warmth is at the heart of everything we do. Our crew bring genuine passion for the islands, sharing stories, tips, and local knowledge on every voyage.

Community

We are proud partners of the island communities we serve, supporting local economies, cultural heritage, and the preservation of Ireland's unique island way of life.

2009

The First Sailing

Irish Ferries was founded by Seán Murphy and a small team of Clare natives. Our inaugural voyage carried 42 passengers from Doolin Pier to Inis Oírr on a crisp April morning — the beginning of something special.

2011

Expanding to All Three Islands

With demand growing rapidly, we added routes to Inis Mór and Inis Meáin, completing our full Aran Islands service. A second vessel joined the fleet, doubling our daily capacity.

2014

Cliffs of Moher Route Launched

We introduced our breathtaking sea-level cruise past the Cliffs of Moher — a perspective no land route can match. The route quickly became our most popular offering, drawing visitors from over 60 countries.

2017

Wild Atlantic Way Partnership

Irish Ferries became an official partner of the Wild Atlantic Way tourism initiative, cementing our place as a cornerstone experience on Ireland's 2,500km coastal route.

2020

Resilience & Reinvention

Facing unprecedented challenges, we invested in our fleet maintenance and safety protocols, emerging stronger and launching our first fully online booking system to serve our loyal customers.

2024

250,000 Passengers Milestone

We proudly celebrated welcoming our 250,000th passenger — a family from Dublin on their first ever Aran Islands adventure. Our new eco-friendly vessel joined the fleet, marking our commitment to sustainable sailing.
